Perth Startups Transform Healthcare, Energy With City-Backed Programs

Perth's startup ecosystem has climbed to 4th in Australia and 192nd globally, with 205 top startups identified as of July 2026. But for residents, the real measure isn't the ranking-it's how these companies are tackling problems closer to home.

One of the most visible changes is in healthcare. WA telehealth startup BlinkLab is addressing Perth's pediatrician crisis by reducing wait times for children with developmental and behavioral issues. Parents who once faced months-long delays for a specialist appointment can now access assessments online, a shift that's easing pressure on a system stretched thin by a shortage of local pediatricians.

City-backed programs fuel local innovation

The City of Perth runs the 'Plus Eight Pre-Accelerator' program, selecting early-stage local businesses for support. Among this year's cohort are Moondyne AI, which uses artificial intelligence for mineral exploration-a nod to WA's mining heritage-and SPACEJUMP, a gaming and esports hub that aims to create a physical gathering space for Perth's growing digital community.

Other startups are tackling environmental challenges. AgTech firm Rumin8 has raised $17.7 million for methane reduction technology, a breakthrough that could help WA's agricultural sector lower its carbon footprint. On the energy front, renewable energy company Zenith Energy has secured A$1.9 billion, positioning it to play a major role in the state's transition to cleaner power sources.

Government grants and a growing ecosystem

West Tech Fest 2025, held in Perth from December 8-12, spotlighted 21 local innovators who received over $1.9 million in government grant funding. The event showcased a range of startups, but the common thread was local impact-companies solving problems for Western Australians, not just exporting software overseas.

The ecosystem isn't huge yet, but it's concentrated. With 205 top startups identified as of July 2026, Perth's scene remains small by global standards. However, the combination of city-backed accelerators, government grants, and homegrown success stories like Rumin8 and Zenith Energy suggests the city is building a foundation for sustained growth.

For residents, the next few years will show whether these early wins translate into lasting change. More kids seen by specialists. More farmers cutting methane. More gamers with a place to play. If the startups keep growing, Perth's everyday life may look very different-and measurably better-before long.
