Perth Police Launch New Patrol Strategy After 23% Vehicle Theft Spike

Western Australia Police have released their weekly crime statistics, revealing a concerning surge in vehicle-related theft across Perth's inner suburbs, with particular clusters reported in Northbridge, Leederville and around the Hay Street entertainment precinct.

The figures, released Wednesday, show 47 reported car break-ins between Monday and Sunday last week-up significantly from the 38 incidents recorded in the previous seven days. Property stolen from vehicles has included laptops, phones, and cash, with average losses per incident sitting at $1,840.

"We're seeing opportunistic offenders targeting parked vehicles during peak entertainment hours," a WA Police spokesperson indicated in their weekly briefing. The department has responded by deploying additional foot patrols along Hay Street and increasing visibility near popular venues including Crown Perth and Northbridge's nightlife precinct during Friday and Saturday evenings.

In a separate development, the Metropolitan Fire Service responded to a structure fire on Wellington Street in Perth's CBD Thursday morning. Crews contained the blaze to the third floor of a commercial office building, with no injuries reported. The cause remains under investigation. Response times averaged 4 minutes 32 seconds-within service targets.

Meanwhile, St John Ambulance reported a busy week managing 2,847 emergency callouts across the Perth region, slightly above the weekly average of 2,650. Senior paramedic services were stretched particularly during Friday and Saturday nights, with response times to non-urgent calls occasionally exceeding 45 minutes in outer suburbs including Rockingham and Mandurah.

The WA Police also announced a new community initiative launching next month: "Park Smart Perth," an awareness campaign targeting vehicle security, with free steering wheel locks being distributed at shopping centres including Westfield Carousel and Lakeland Shopping Centre. The program aims to reduce easy-access theft and educate residents about basic vehicle security measures.

Additionally, detectives charged a 34-year-old man this week following a string of aggravated burglaries across East Perth and Claisebrook. The man was remanded in custody and is due to appear in Perth District Court on 8 July.
